Hannah Andrus is one of the hardest working individuals at FarmaceuticalRX, tackling new challenges with patience and ease. There really isn’t anyone quite like her. She’s easy to spot bopping around the grow because her hair is pink, sometimes purple. What’s the point in boring colors? People love purple cannabis, so why not purple hair?

In all seriousness, Hannah is the Compliance Manager here at FRX in Farrell, PA and like most roles in cannabis, hers is dynamic, ever-changing, and endlessly engaging. Whether she’s double-checking test labels, reviewing production with the Nicks, or ensuring the facility and its products are fully compliant, she’s always in motion. There’s also an added layer to her work that sets FRX apart: the organic commitment that runs through everything the company does.

We sat down with Hannah to pull back the curtain on one of the industry’s most essential and often invisible roles. From her roots managing a Pizza Hut to navigating Pennsylvania’s complex medical cannabis regulations, her story is equal parts relatable and remarkable.

From Pizza Hut to Pennsylvania’s Cannabis Program

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at FarmaceuticalRX. How long have you been with the company?

I started at FarmaceuticalRX just a few months after its inception, back in September 2019, as a Packaging Tech. This will actually be my 7th year here! Fun fact: Allison, our Lab Manager trained me on my very first day. (Read more about Allison here!)

What originally inspired you to pursue a career in the cannabis industry?

I was excited to be part of something brand new. Expanding my knowledge is really important to me, and I figured the best way to do it was to jump in headfirst.

Did you have a background in other industries before cannabis?

I spent years managing a Pizza Hut and working in a bakery before that, both very customer-facing roles. When I left, I actually wanted to step back from management and just be the best employee I could be for someone else (lol). Working with the public is honestly the fastest way to build confidence and resilience. Sometimes you have to have a quick cry in the walk-in cooler and keep pushing with a brave face, and I can say that absolutely prepared me for the ups and downs of this industry.

What brought you to Pennsylvania’s medical cannabis program specifically?

Honestly? Luck. It was one of the first jobs I applied to after moving out of my hometown of Corry, PA. I had no real plan. I was crashing in a friend’s basement with my husband and a bunch of cats. I’m incredibly grateful for where I am today and for everyone I’ve met along the way.

What Does a Compliance Manager Actually Do All Day?

As Compliance Manager, what does a typical day look like for you?

A little bit of everything, honestly. Reviewing packaging and labeling, quality control checks, coordinating with different departments to stay on top of inventory and procedures, endless Excel spreadsheets, monitoring room environmental conditions and in any spare moment, gramming flower. Compliance and production work so closely together that the two roles blend pretty seamlessly.

How do compliance and production support FarmaceuticalRX’s mission as a whole?

Every single department revolves around compliance. Nothing in this building moves without being inventoried, tracked, and processed in some way. It’s the backbone of everything we do.

What goes on behind the scenes that patients and the public might not realize?

Compliance is mostly invisible work. Maintaining regulatory documentation and ensuring every step of the process is tracked while everything else is in motion can get complicated. Everything we do requires SOPs and approvals to maintain efficiency, accuracy, and quality. But at the end of the day, it’s a plant. Variables happen. Frequently.

The Reality of Operating in a Highly Regulated Industry

What are some of the biggest challenges and opportunities of working in such a tightly regulated space?

Even in this fast-changing climate, there are no quick changes when it comes to regulations. Every single decision, including products, packaging, labels, product names, pop-up events, marketing materials, and even branded swag, has to be submitted to the Bureau of Medical Marijuana for approval. Response times have improved since the early days, but every decision still has to be planned far enough in advance to account for potential delays. It can be really difficult to pivot when you’re working within those limits.

What might surprise people outside the industry about cannabis compliance?

I think people would be surprised by how little direction you actually receive. The Pennsylvania regulations are publicly available and that’s essentially the extent of guidance we have. A lot of what we do is ask ourselves, ‘Can we do this?’ There’s no guidebook. Just the regulations and a lot of approval forms.

Always Coming Back to the Patient

At the end of the day, everything in the medical program comes back to the patient. How does your work help ensure patients receive safe, reliable medicine?

Compliance plays a really important role in protecting patients. By ensuring accurate labeling, consistent processes, and adherence to regulations, we help maintain product safety and reliability. Patients deserve to have confidence in the medicine they’re using and we take that seriously.

What’s one thing you wish patients knew about the work that goes into producing and regulating medical cannabis?

We genuinely care about our product. Most of us have been working together here for years, and behind every product on the shelf is a team that has been working hard to maintain consistency, safety, and quality. Part of our new employee training is a simple philosophy: ‘Send out what you would want to receive.’ Every positive review is a win and every negative review is a chance for us to improve.

Transparency, Testing & Looking Ahead

If a patient could ask you one question directly about how their medicine is produced and regulated, what do you think they would want to know?

One of the most common questions we see is about testing and it’s a great one. We have regulations for that too, and so do the testing labs. Every harvest gets tested in small batches, every finished product that goes out gets tested multiple times to ensure accurate results, and testing samples are pulled at random from the entire lot. In Pennsylvania, we are not able to remediate any product that doesn’t pass testing, whether that’s harvested flower or a finished product. We love being transparent about our test results, so if you have questions, reach out!

How do you see the medical cannabis industry evolving in Pennsylvania over the next few years?

Just like I’m sure everyone else is, I’m hopeful and a little nervous to see adult-use get legalized in PA. I’m also looking forward to improvements in technology and production methods, and legislation that helps us better support patient access and product quality.

What would you like patients to know about FarmaceuticalRX’s commitment to quality, safety, and compliance?

At FRX, quality is foundational to everything we do. We are constantly working, adapting, and improving to provide the best quality possible while operating within our governmental structure.

A Note of Gratitude

When asked about her proudest accomplishment at FRX, Hannah’s answer was simple and sincere: “Every step we’ve taken to grow, learn, expand, and advance in the industry has been an accomplishment. I wouldn’t be here without the team we’ve built and that’s something I’m proud to be a part of.”

That kind of team spirit is exactly what you’ll find woven into everything FarmaceuticalRX does, from the grow room to the compliance docs to the products you trust.
